Sound waves bounce off many walls and objects in a room creating echo / reverberation. The amount and the intensity of reverberation depends on how many or how few sound absorbing materials a room is made up of.
For instance a typical home theater or cinema room is usually comprised of timber flooring or carpet, plaster and very little else in regards to sound absorbing. The theater room of course would need to maintain a professional and aesthetic look.
Using Acoustic foam as treatment rather than sound panels isn't a smart option because whilst foam provides good sound absorption, it goes against aesthetics of room decor and design. Acoustic foam sound absorbers simply look unattractive and uncomplimentary in any interior other than a recording studio.
